I purchased this set myself directly from the manufacturer in Mexico, south of Guadalajara, just recently and brought it home to Tucson.
This particular manufacturer is actually a society of artesanos which builds exceptional quality pieces for custom orders sold through high-end retailer specialty stores in Mexico, internationally throughout South America, as well as for a few high-end furniture dealers in the U.S. They use higher quality top grain leathers and foam materials and spend 3-4 times the labor to produce each piece.
This set has not been used AT ALL!
It's absolutely gorgeous, in a darker tobacco colored cowhide leather, (not pigskin), with darker brown tooled leather inserts, and very solidly built with top-grain leather and a higher quality foam used in its' cushioning than what is used in most equipal construction. The cushioning in this set is very dense and well-fitted. The leather is snugly fitted and tucked over the cushioning and has no wrinkled or baggy air pockets as is seen in so many of the equipales from Mexico. And the leather is trim-fitted with the 'clavos', or the rustic nail head trim, instead of the mere nails, stapling or stitching.
This equipal furniture is used both indoors and outdoors in Mexico throughout the dry climates (including Guadalajara, the higher deserts there across Mexico, Zacaolo, Jalisco, etc., and also here in Tucson and the southwestern U.S.). Equipales kept outside can last at least 20 years.
It's very rugged and durable and requires little maintenance other than dusting and occasional conditioning to the leather.
Unfortunately, my house here in Arizona is located in an area, and situated in such a way, that I do not even get to use or enjoy it! (We're located to the southeast of Tucson in a VERY HEAVY WIND area! I have a long and totally open patio which faces directly into an oncoming wind tunnel with no walls to protect anything from the gale-force winds in this area! And you would not believe the heaps of trash and debris that we get coating every surface on a continual basis. )
Some people insist they never even need to condition their equipales around here but with my winds and the terrible in-blown debris, I keep it covered all the time. Since I brought it home a couple of months ago, it's been kept clean, dusted, conditioned but also covered completely. I really wish I had room to bring it inside the house but unfortunately I just don't.
It's just too beautiful and too special to keep covered and unused.
